Muir Glen Harvest

Muir Glen Organic hired me to document their first heirloom tomato harvest at one of their farms in California. For the first time ever, Muir Glen was planning to can this type of tomato in a large-scale canning facility. These tomatoes are not traditionally canned, as they are of irregular size and shape and have a very soft skin, which is prone to bursting and bruising. For canning, companies usually use a type of tomatoes that has a thicker skin, to better withstand transportation. This shoot was completed over the course of one long hot day - it was over 80°F both on the field and in the cannery. In my images I wanted to honor not just the fruit but the workers who harvested it. The tomatoes were harvested and canned that same day.
